Each year, the Canberra Model Shipwrights Society holds a model boat building course at Ginninderra College - usually with a relatively simple model which allows students to learn the relevant techniques which will allow them to contemplate more complex models. CMSS members and "gurus" help with the instruction and useful guidance for the student's particular interests. Four courses have been held to date and the students have produced some very good models even though, for many, this has been their first attempt.

The course for 2010 is expected to commence on 21st October this year, and the model boat will be the “San Juan” felucca, which is an entry level kit by OcCre.

CMSS Membership

New members are always welcome. Annual subscriptions for membership of the Canberra Model Shiprights Society are available to any interested member of the public. The fees for membership are reviewed annually and agreed to by members at the annual general meeting of the Society. Members wishing to attend the monthly meetings are encouraged to become members of the Hellenic Club of Canberra so that the Society may use the Hellenic club meeting facilities.

Discounted CMSS memberships are available to those people living too far away from Canberra to take regular advantage of the monthly meetings and other local activities.

Membership Benefits

Monthly meetings have a minimal formal component with a variety of other interesting activities, that may include show-and-tell sessions, tutorials, workshops, research paper presentations and guest speakers.

The society also organises excursions for members to various events, exhibitions, places of interest and relevance to model ship builders.

In addition to the monthly meetings, exhibitions and other social events, the Society publishes a quarterly newsletter containing items of interest to members. The Society also publishes material such as Workshop Notes and critiques and comments regarding publications, books, model kits, materials, drawings and plans which may be available to members.

The Society is currently scratch building a model of the Lady Nelson as a joint project for club members. This is a great opportunity for members with little or no scratch building experience to get some first hand experience while learning from some of the most experienced members.

Membership Application

Download the Canberra Model Shipwrights Society membership PDF form and either send the form to the CMSS Secretary (address details on the form), or take it along to one of our monthly meetings.
